A leading European supplier of Japanese matcha tea had previously outsourced packaging to a copacker. However, as demand grew, they decided to bring packaging under their own roof. Their goal was to gain greater control over the packaging process and build a solution tailored to their specific product.
Interestingly, the recommendation for NOMATECH technology came from the copacker itself, which already had positive experience with our equipment. For this project, the final choice was a combination of the TOBOGAN 250C vertical packaging machine and the RACKET-S micro auger filler.
Matcha is a very finely ground powder with several specific packaging requirements. It is sensitive to light, air, and moisture, so maintaining product quality is essential not only during dosing but also during sealing.
A common issue with powder products is that fine dust can enter the seal. When this happens, the packaging loses airtightness and the product inside can deteriorate more quickly. With matcha tea, this is a critical concern, as even minor seal contamination can negatively affect product quality.
Another important requirement was the very small dose size. In this case, each portion was 2 g, making dosing accuracy crucial. For such small quantities, the technology must operate precisely and consistently, even with a fine product texture.
For matcha packaging, a pair of machines was selected to match both the product characteristics and performance requirements.
The TOBOGAN 250C is a continuous vertical packaging machine designed for high-speed packaging. It can handle bags up to 5 liters or operate at mechanical speeds of up to 160 packs per minute. In this application, its ability to maintain high performance while ensuring process stability was essential.
The product was dosed into the TOBOGAN machine using the RACKET-S micro auger filler. This dosing principle is particularly suitable for fine powder products, where precise small-dose control and consistent material flow are key.
The practical challenge was not to “package slowly and carefully,” but rather to combine precision with performance. The line had to accurately dose fine powder into small sachets while maintaining high productivity.
In this case, the NOMATECH solution enabled packaging speeds of more than 100 sachets per minute.
This case study shows that packaging premium matcha tea is not just about machine performance. The decisive factor is the combination of several elements: precise dosing of small portions, handling of fine powder, seal protection, and overall process stability.
For the European matcha supplier, the combination of TOBOGAN 250C and RACKET-S micro met the requirements for speed, accuracy, and product characteristics. It allowed the customer to move from outsourced copacking to in-house production with a solution tailored to their specific application.
